With Scrum through the Crisis
Everyone is talking about the financial crisis today. Can Scrum help organizations through it or any other crisis? I strongly believe that it can! Here my top 3 arguments:
#1 Scrum is pure lean management.
#2 Scrum is continuous crisis management.
#3 Scrum is Agile organization development.

Planning Poker - Visualize the Numbers
Planning and estimation are communication processes, and Planning Poker is a popular facilitation tool (or should I say facilitation game). Many in the Agile community, including myself, prefer to estimate in Story Points from the row of numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100 and infinity. One of the advantages is that this row covers a huge bandwidth of possible sizes and cope with the increasing uncertainty of large estimates.
However, I have observed a disadvantage. I have often seen teams jumping over two digit even if they just wanted to say “this Story is just slightly bigger than that one”. In such cases I have always had to intervene and explain that the number chosen meant “4 times bigger than” and not just “slightly bigger than”. My explanation for this behavior is that the estimation row was developed non-linearly. This is hard for people to conceptualize, as they extrapolate linearly. We can observe this pattern whenever we talk about the worldwide population explosion. Even though the underlying mechanism is well-known, we only understand the effect if we see explicit charts.
With this in mind, I asked myself how Planning Poker could be visually enhanced. The answer was to design Planning Poker Cards which display the numbers and their meanings distinctly. The numbers are illustrated as colored fourths in the background of each card. It is now easy to see what 2 or 4 times bigger means. The colors of the cards also have a meaning:
- Green: o.k. and ready for a Sprint.
- Orange: high risk, Story should be smaller. Story breakdown may take place during the next Planning/Estimation meeting.
- Red: Story is much to big or may be impossible. Additional joint effort is required to break this Story down into smaller pieces.

In Scrum und Agile hören wir da auf zu planen, wo es keinen Sinn mehr macht. Stattdessen verbessern wir den Plan, sobald wir das können. Darüber hinaus sorgen wir dafür, dass jeder den Plan kennt, versteht und sich dazu verpflichten kann. Beides führt dazu, dass agiles Planen sogar noch schwerer und umfangreicher ist, als man es vorher gekannt hat. Im Grunde genommen besteht Scrum aus nichts anderem als Planen. Versteht man Planen als eine Form der Kommunikation die sicherstellt das eine Gruppe oder Team die Tasks zum erreichen eines Zieles kennt, versteht man Scrum.
The Day after the Retrospective
At the Scrum Gathering 2008 Andreas Schliep and I talked about “The Day after the Retrospective”:
The first iteration in our new agile project is over. The team found a lot of impediments or possible improvements during their retrospective. But what happens the next day, week or month? Frequently nothing at all. Every day the impediments remain unresolved, team and organization lose more trust in agile methods and in the benefit of retrospectives.
This talk tends to find ways to handle the results of our retrospectives and keep on track with forcing the changes in our organization.

Erstes Treffen von Scrum-Aktivisten in Wien
Während des Scrum Brunch mit Jeff Sutherland am 29.03.2008 in Wien ist spontan die Idee entstanden ein regelmäßiges Treffen von Scrum Usern zum gemeinsamen Erfahrungsaustausch zu organisieren. Das könnte die Geburt einer aktiven Scrum-Gruppe in Österreich werden.
Jedenfalls die passende Yahoo Gruppe gibt es schon. Einen Termin für ein erstes Treffen auch: 6.5.2008. Jetzt fehlen nur noch ein paar Aktivisten, die mitmachen wollen. Viel ist nicht zu tun. Einfach in der Gruppe posten ob Ihr am 6.5 dabei seid.
Ich freue mich auf jeden Fall auf ein interessantes Treffen und viele neue Ideen und Anregungen.
Scrum Buch #1
Scrum erkennt man nicht an der Anwendung bestimmter Praktiken und Regeln sondern daran, daß die Werte und Prinzipien von Scrum gelebt werden. Daher ist Scrum ja auch so schwer umzusetzen.
Dies ist der Grund weshalb mein Buch auf Platz 1 der Top 5 Bücher für den ScrumMaster bis vor kurzem “The 7 habits of highly effective people“ von Stephen R. Covey war. Kein ausgewiesenes Scrum Buch, sondern ein Buch über Prinzipien, welches mir geholfen hat ein hoffentlich guter Scrum Coach und ScrumMaster zu sein. Nicht, daß die Scrum-Bücher am Markt bisher schlecht waren, aber sie haben es nach meiner Meinung nicht geschafft zu vermitteln was einen guten ScrumMaster ausmacht.
Das hat sich jetzt geändert. Boris Gloger’s neues Buch hat Platz 1 meiner Hitliste eingenommen: “Scrum - Produkte Zuverlässig und schneller Entwickelnâ€
Endlich gibt es ein umfassendes Handbuch für den ScrumMaster und alle die mit Scrum arbeiten. Der Einsteiger lernt die Wurzeln von Scrum kennen und kann sich natürlich auch über das Prozess Modell informieren. Aber selbst nach 3 Jahren Scrum-Fronterfahrung findet man in diesem Buch so viele neue Information und Anregungen, daß es schnell zu einem ständigen Begleiter wird.
Vor allem aber spürt man beim Lesen jedes Kapitels die Begeisterung Boris Gloger’s nicht nur Scrum erklären zu wollen, sondern dem Leser die Prinzipien und Werte zu vermitteln.
